Gleggie, 12: Things you said when you thought I was asleep

She’s asleep when he brushes her hair out of her face, watching with a smile as stray strands drift stubbornly back upon her soft cheeks. It’s still early, or what he believes to be early. He never did accept the clock Deanna offered him the first night they settled in Alexandria. They went so long without them, they seemed pointless. A waste of space, something else to worry about when they had enough on their plates. But Glenn knew it was still early based on the shadows that fell upon his wife’s face. The silver light cast by the full moon illuminated the dips and curves of her face, from the hollows of her eyes to the rise of her cheekbones.

“You’re beautiful,” Glenn whispers, trying again without much determination to brush the hair away from her face. It flutters back into place. “I’m so glad the world ended and I had the opportunity to know you.” He bends down and pressed a feather-light kiss to Maggie’s temple. Her familiar, warm scent surrounds him, and his eyes wet with tears on their own accord. “Everything… it was worth it, for you. I would go through it all again just to hold you for one night.”

“Don’t say such silly things.” Maggie’s voice is muffled by the pillow and scratchy with sleep. Glenn rips away, blinking in shock at finding his wife awake. Her eyes are still closed, her face still relaxed, like she had spoken in her sleep. But her lips had curved up in the smallest smile. “Go to sleep.”

“Yes, my love,” Glenn breathes. When he wraps Maggie in his arms and feels her breath slow against his chest, he doesn’t regret what he said. He’d say it again and again, even if it killed him.
